Linkages between democracy and human rights, environment, and climate change
Every person has the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. A healthy environment is also a prerequisite for the enjoyment of many other human rights, such as the right to water, health, and well-being, the right to food, clothing, housing and medicines – all of which derive from natural resources. However, the growing impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation have severe consequences for fundamental human rights, including the rights to food, health, and water.
A sustainable environment supports the foundations of human rights and democracy
Promoting human rights and applying a human rights-based approach can empower people and foster stronger action for climate change, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystems. At the same time, a sustainable environment supports the foundations of human rights and democracy by protecting people's fundamental rights to health, security, and participation. It promotes equality, reduces conflicts, fosters inclusive governance, and ensures that natural resources are used responsibly for the benefit of all, now and in the future.
Weak institutions, corruption, and mismanagement can result in environmental degradation and exploitation
Lack of democracy and human rights abuses can harm the environment in several ways. Weak institutions, ineffective environmental legislation and unclear accountability can allow corporations, governments and individuals to harm the environment and exploit natural resources unsustainably. Poor transparency and a lack of public access and participation prevents efforts to address these issues. Corruption and mismanagement may result in environmental degradation, and political instability distracts from environmental action. Additionally, forced displacement due to human rights abuses and other factors, including climate change and biodiversity degradation, can lead to overuse of resources and further destruction of ecosystems.
