Good examples and opportunities for Nature-based Solutions (NbS)

Published

The Helpdesk supported Sida’s review of its biodiversity support with a focus on Nature-based Solutions (NbS), identifying good examples and opportunities to strengthen NbS integration. It also assisted Sida in delivering an NbS seminar series during the year.

Nature-based Solutions

The concept Nature-based Solutions, NbS, has evolved over time but originates in the principles of the ecosystem approach advocated by the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). As of 2022, NbS is defined by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) as “actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services, resilience and biodiversity benefits".
